ComNets Dortmund team receives transfer price for 5G engagement

Repairing steel bridges without full closures, deploying a private 5G network, or optimizing supply chains in the hinterland of seaports – for the second time, TU Dortmund University has awarded the Dr. Michael Brenscheidt Transfer Prize to three research projects that have been successfully applied in practice.
The award ceremony took place on January 29 as part of the tenth “Future Dialogue”, during which Dr. Christian Samulewicz from Materna visited the university and discussed the key success factors of digital transformation.^
The project “5G.NRW on Site” by the team from the Chair of Communication Networks (ComNets) at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology was awarded second place. The team at TU Dortmund University bridge the gap between theoretical 5G research and the practical use of private campus networks with a three-phase model. The team developed the free tool “Campusnetzplan”, which estimates the application fees for a planned network and pre-fills an application. During 5G action days on site, the researchers bring a mobile laboratory that allows participants to gain hands-on experience. In a “Deep Dive” session, they also provide an individual performance evaluation during ongoing operation. In the future, the model is also intended to be extended to the deployment of 6G.
